Belk Track Statues: The Javelin Thrower, The Hurdler, The Finish Line

Dan Koster
Dan Koster

Artist  Richard Hallier, 1990
Medium  Bronze
Location  Belk Track and Fetzer Field

Donated by Irwin Belk, these three statues by Richard Hallier grace the southwest corner of Belk Track & Fetzer Field. Hallier creates his extraordinarily lifelike statues by working from hundreds of pictures, from multiple angles, of athletes in motion. The three Belk Track statues depict a female athlete preparing to throw a javelin, a male runner leaping a hurdle, and a female sprinter breaking the tape at the finish line. Castings of these and other sculptures by Hallier can be seen at other universities in North Carolina, as well as at the U.S. Olympics Training Center in Colorado Springs and in churches and private collections. Belk, a track and field letterman at UNC who went on to become one of the most prominent businessmen in North Carolina, also donated the statue of The Ram that stands at the entrance of Kenan Stadium.
