Eve Carson Memorial Butterfly Bench

Dan Koster

Artist  Cricket Forge, 2008
Medium  Painted Iron
Location  Behind Campus Y

This Carolina blue butterfly was donated to the University in the days following the murder of student body president Eve Carson. It was placed behind the Campus Y near the billboard cubes, which were the focal point for memorials written by students for Carson. A brass plaque dedicates the sculptural bench to her. Cricket Forge, a branch of Vega Metals in Durham, has created the Butterfly Bench since 1999, but the donor of this particular bench remains anonymous. Members of the University community continue to decorate the sculpture with flowers, garlands, and other tokens of remembrance. The plaza near the butterfly has been selected as the site of a garden that will be created in memory of Carson.
