On University Day in 1997, trustees of the John Motley Morehead Foundation dedicated this statue of the 11th president of the United States, James K. Polk, a Carolina alumnus. The statue stands at the center of the Genevieve Morehead Memorial Art Rotunda, which also features several portraits from the late Mrs. Morehead's private collection. The Rotunda is open to the public and can be accessed via the UNC Visitors' Center on the west side of the Planetarium. Artist Stephen H. Smith is a Carolina alumnus whose other work on campus includes the Frank Hawkins Kenan memorial bronze relief at Kenan Stadium; the William R. Davie Award bronze medallion; and the bust of William C. Friday in the Undergraduate Library.
