Under constant political attack, the Republicans could not restore enrollment or the university's financial health and finally closed it in 1871. Just as they did, Democrats recaptured the legislature, and Battle and Spencer launched a campaign to reopen the university under that party's leadership. In 1874, the General Assembly appointed new trustees who attacked the debt with negotiations, land sales, and private fundraising.
