The School of Library Science opened in 1931 with Susan Grey Akers as one of its original faculty members. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1932, when she was only the second woman in the United States to hold a doctorate in library science. The university appointed her director of the school in 1935, and in 1942 changed her title to dean. Akers was the first woman on campus to hold that title.
