In 1995, the university opened a new neuroscience hospital, followed in 2002 by new hospitals for women and for children. These facilities advanced health and medical education at Chapel Hill. The programs continue to emphasize expanding care for the state's citizens, providing training for all levels and types of health professionals, and performing path-breaking research. During the fiscal year 2006, health affairs attracted $296.6 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, first among public southern universities.
