Shinzaburo Mogi

The first international student at UNC is believed to be Shinzaburo Mogi, from Tokyo. Mogi was enrolled during the 1893-1894 school year, and took classes in Math, English, and Physics. Mogi's presence on campus made him a minor celebrity in the region. A Durham newspaper announced his arrival under the headline, "A Jap at the University." There is very little information available about Mogi's time at UNC, nor do we know what he did immediately after leaving Carolina. He spent several decades in the United States and Canada, opening soy sauce factories in Denver and Toronto and later working in Chicago, where he ran a business importing Japanese products.
