1988-1989: Student Organizations

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, with a growing number of Asian and Asian American students on campus, students created several new organizations. Sangam, UNC's South Asian awareness organization was founded in 1987 as an Indian American student group, the Korean American Students Association was formed in 1988, and the Asian Students Association in 1989.

The student organizations were active on campus, hosting social events and performances. In 1992, Sangam hosted a national conference of Indian American students.
