Graham left the Senate at the age of sixty-four. After declining several appointment opportunities, he accepted a position with the United Nations to mediate the dispute between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region. Seeking an agreement in this conflict occupied the rest of his life. He died in 1972 at the age of 85. In 1968, the university named a new student union building for Graham.
