Easter Snipes, cook at President Kemp Plummer Battle's house

While some white women of Chapel Hill acquired education and even carried on businesses, the village's black women lived in a very circumscribed world of household work. The college servants were men, but the faculty and other residents of the village also owned female slaves, some of whom were married to college servants.
