The campaign for woman suffrage came to Chapel Hill in 1913 when the wife of Professor Archibald Henderson, Barbara Bynum Henderson, became the president of the Equal Suffrage League of North Carolina. She was a 1902 graduate of the university and a poetry translator. Opposition to woman suffrage was strong in the state, so leaders like Henderson adopted cautious tactics.
