In 1898 Sallie Walker Stockard became the first woman to receive a degree from the university. She came to Chapel Hill after graduating from Guilford College, went on to receive a masters in 1900, and then pursued graduate study at Columbia University. During their first decades at Carolina, female students averaged about twenty-five out of a total student body of eight hundred. During this era, the state's all woman's college in Greensboro offered a more hospitable environment for female students.
