Mary Turner Lane

In 1976, Mary Turner Lane of the School of Education became the first director of the women's studies program. Lane began her Carolina career as an instructor in 1954 and served as a key figure in the negotiations that ended special social restrictions for female students. Lane also helped found the Association for Women Faculty and Professionals and served as a chair of the Committee on the Status of Women.
