Women and the War Effort

Female students also joined the war effort and took part in the Voluntary Civilian Training Corps. In October 1942, two platoons of coeds began drilling in Kenan Stadium under male command. The university also offered courses that would qualify students for positions in female military units such as the Navy’s WAVES. Nurses made up a large portion of the staff stationed in Chapel Hill as part of the Navy’s pre-flight training program.
