A shortage of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals is an ongoing problem in North Carolina. With federal funding, the university responded to this problem in 1972 by creating Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), which provide clinical service and health care training for local communities. By 1975, nine regional AHECs operated in North Carolina.
