Founded in 1990, APPLES (Assisting People in Planning Learning Experiences in Service) is a student-led program that helps students, faculty, and community agencies create service-learning partnerships. Its goal is to increase the student body's civic involvement through participation in hands-on experiences that address the needs of North Carolina communities. APPLES now offers more than ten programs that range from internships and community-based research to international service-learning experiences. In 2005-06, nearly 1,600 students participated in APPLES programs.
