Matt McConnell's "Evolution," a lithe, undulating, glowing sculpture, spans all three stories of the Carolina Union stairwell. The student committee that selected the North Carolina artist for the commission collaborated with him on the design of his 27-foot-long creation. In addition to his seemingly lighter-than-air fiberglass works, McConnell creates whimsical yet functional lamps and furniture. Institutions displaying his work include the two Mint Museums in Charlotte, Duke Medical Center in Durham, Blue Cross Blue Shield Headquarters in Chapel Hill, Colonial Mall in Burlington, and many other public institutions, private residences, and restaurants in North Carolina.
