Memorial to Cheryl "Sparkie" Alexander

The School of Nursing Class of 1967 commissioned local artist Mike Roig to create an artwork in memory of their classmate Cheryl "Sparkie" Alexander, who died of cancer in 2006. Created entirely from recycled metals, the sculpture depicts a pelican, Alexander's favorite bird and also a symbol of altruism, flanked by two sailboats and a flock of birds flying overhead. Moving parts represent Alexander's energy and habit of rocking in place. The sculpture stands on the rooftop garden of Carrington Hall, accessible from the fourth floor during business hours. Many more of Roig's works can be seen at public institutions in the Triangle area, including the Chapel Hill Public Library.
