Richard Fleischer was commissioned by the North Carolina Arts Commission's Artworks in State Buildings Program to create a floor for the main atrium of the Lineberger Cancer Center. At ground level, the criss-crossing stripes and patterns suggest paths leading from the main entrance to various ramps and stairways, even extending down several corridors towards offices and laboratories. The overhead view from the second- and third-story balconies reveals that the multiple earth-toned geometric patterns reflect those found in the quilts that have been made by generations of North Carolina quilters.
