Elizabeth Sale-Jacquet first scribbled her idea for "The Message Horn" on a napkin, envisioning a horn that would allow the living to communicate with lost loved ones. She developed the idea through a series of drawings and paintings, which her husband, Jonathan, later realized as a steel sculpture, the first casting of which stands in the Hanes Alumni Sculpture Garden at UNC. The horn is a working interactive piece; the slightest whisper into the narrow mouthpiece of the horn can be heard from the concrete platform at the other end. Both of the Jacquets earned their MFAs at UNC-Charlotte and continue to create and exhibit in the southeastern U.S. Jonathan was the recipient of a 2002 North Carolina Woodworking Fellowship.
