George Watts Hill, Jr. (1901-1993) and Hill Alumni Center
George Watts Hill, Jr., was the son of university benefactor John Sprunt Hill. Like his father, he pursued business interests in insurance, banking, and real estate. He took an active role in the development of Research Triangle Park and established the Hill Learning Development Center at Durham Academy to assist children with learning disabilities. When the campaign for the new alumni center began, Hill pledged a $3.5 million challenge grant. When the center opened in 1993, the university named it for him.
