Mary Ann Smith (d. 1891) and Smith Building

The daughter of prominent Raleigh merchant Richard Smith, Mary Ann Smith left her estate for a chair in chemistry and scholarships for needy students when she died in 1891. With fund from this inheritance, the university built Smith dormitory in 1901. It now contains offices and classrooms.
